Osprey Class - Year 5 2024 - 2025
Miss Egerton-Morris
Osprey Class have a super term of learning ahead. In English, we will be exploring quality texts through which we be developing our range of writing skills. These texts always remain ‘top secret’ until the last moment, as the mystery surrounding them is used to stimulate the children’s ideas. Using these texts as stimulus, the children will produce a final piece of writing in the style of a documentary narrative and a balanced argument.
In maths, we will continue to follow Power Maths which is based on a mastery approach to the teaching of mathematics designed to strengthen and deepen understanding. Children will continue the work on decimals and percentages, perimeter and area and graphs and tables.
In our wider curriculum work, we will begin the term in RE learning about diversity. By the end of the topic, the children will have learnt all things diversity focusing specifically on the work of Jo Cox and will create a piece of artwork that reflects their learning. In PSHE, the children will explore the theme of ‘health and wellbeing’, learning about our bodies, how to look after them and the changes we may experience. Our Art and Design topic is called 'Every Picture Tells A Story'. We will be learning how artists convey opinions and thoughts through their artwork. In design and technology, we will be looking at cooking and nutrition.
In Geography, we going to be learning about globalisation, and the increasing connections between places and people across the planet. In history, the children will be exploring the changes Britain has seen.
Our science topic will start off with a biology topic, 'Evolution and Inheritance' where the children will discover all things adaptation, evolution and inheritance. We will then move onto 'Body Help' where the children will learn more about their bodies!
Please do have a look at our comprehensive curriculum page on our website for more information on what your child will be learning and when.
Homework
Homework will be assigned on Tuesdays and due the following Monday. This will be both mathematics and spelling, punctuation and grammar CGP books. Where possible, homework will be closely aligned with topics being covered in class. Practice makes perfect, and these fantastic workbooks have just that. They have a huge range of questions covering all the skills needed to master both mathematics and SPAG.
We strongly recommend that your child continues to practice their times tables on Times Table Rockstars daily to improve their fluency and understanding.
Reading is fundamental for education. We encourage our pupils to read daily at home for at least 5 minutes. We believe that daily reading can greatly impact a child's academic achievements. Keeping a record of each reading session in the Home School Journal and bringing it to school daily will help your child track their progress.
We hope that these exciting topics and opportunities will inspire our children and continue to broaden their horizons.
