Falcon Class - Year 5 & 6 2025 - 2026

Miss Egerton-Morris

Welcome back to Autumn Term 2025. I hope you had an incredible summer filled with laughter, fun and adventures. I am so excited to start this new term with you and your child and cannot wait for us to learn, explore, and grow together in our wonderful classroom.

English

In our English lessons, we will delve into ‘When We Walked on the Moon’ which tells the story of the Apollo missions, culminating in the first human landing on the moon. The book highlights the bravery, intelligence, and engineering feats that made this historic event possible, while also sharing some humorous anecdotes about the astronauts involved. It celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing and is aimed at engaging young readers with the wonders of space exploration. I know this will be a hit with many of the children in Falcon!

Maths

In maths, we are excited to move to WhiteRose Maths; a scheme that we trialled in Summer Term (we all loved it!). This scheme aims to strengthen and deepen understanding of curriculum objectives, whilst supporting the children's fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills. This term, we will focus on place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions.

The children will continue to have weekly arithmetic tests on a Friday, and their progress will be recorded in their Home School Journals.

Wider curriculum

Our exciting new geography topic is “What is life like in the Alps?” The children will become explorers as they discover how these incredible mountains were formed and where they can be found on the map. They’ll find out what it’s really like to live high up in the Alps, from snowy winters to sunny summer meadows, and learn why so many people travel there for adventure and fun. Together, we’ll compare life in the Alps with our own local area, spotting the fascinating similarities and differences in landscapes, weather, jobs, and lifestyles. This topic will take the children on a journey beyond their doorstep, opening their eyes to a whole new way of life in one of Europe’s most amazing places!

In Science, we will explore “Earth and Space”, as the children will take an exciting journey beyond our planet! They will learn about the movement of the Earth, Moon, and Sun, and how these create day, night, months, and seasons. We will explore the planets in our solar system, discover what makes each one unique, and think about our place in the wider universe.

Our RE lessons, will be based on the question ‘Why do people stand up for what they believe in?’. We will also enjoy our weekly Music lessons with Mr Kitcher each Wednesday. In PSHE, our topic will be 'Families and Relationships’.

In French, we will be looking at Portraits Describing in French. In Art and Design, the children will develop their photography skills, through covering useful artistic concepts in a new context, looking at composition, colour, light, abstract images and underlying messages. Finally, in Computing, the children will engage in some data handling, through some exploration of space, binary code, computer architecture and binary operations.

Homework

Homework will be assigned on Tuesdays and due the following Monday. This will be both mathematics and spelling, punctuation and grammar CGP books. Where possible, homework will be closely aligned with topics being covered in class. Practice makes perfect, and these fantastic workbooks have just that. They have a huge range of questions covering all the skills needed to master both mathematics and SPAG.

We strongly recommend that your child continues to practice their times tables on Times Table Rockstars daily to improve their fluency and understanding.

Reading is fundamental for education. We encourage our pupils to read daily at home for at least 5 minutes. We believe that daily reading can greatly impact a child's academic achievements. Keeping a record of each reading session in the Home School Journal and bringing it to school daily will help your child track their progress.

We hope that these exciting topics and opportunities will inspire our children and continue to broaden their horizons.
